The city has around 85 thousand inhabitants. The historical city is culturally rich with baroque style manors, houses, churches, alleys and roads.
In the city there are quilombos (settlements of African slave descendents), considered the most important of these settlements in Minas Gerais.

Approximately 400 people distributed through 60 families live in the Quilombola Community of São Domingos, which has an association of residents and survives off agriculture, dairy cattle breeding, the production of collective processing equipment, jobs outside the community and handicrafts, alongside local tourism.

Ecological tourism is also growing due to the caves and caverns of Santa Fé, and the series of waterfalls in the Prata region, especially the Grande Cachoeira do Prata. Eco-tourism, however, can only be done with the help of qualified professionals, due to the risk involved in these activities.
