The motors roared strongly this Sunday (24th) in the State of Goiás. Leaving Goiânia in direction of Caldas Novas, the 2nd edition of the Sertões International Rally witnessed the cars in full acceleration on the 155 kilometers of the special. With high speeds and many humps and jumps on the course, the fastest duo was Reinaldo Varela/Gustavo Gugelmin, of the Divino Fogão Rally Team/Overdrive.

The fastest also in yesterday’s (23rd) prologue, Reinado Varela prsaised the course. “A very good special to begin the rally. It was short, which is good to fine tune the competing cars and motorbikes. There were lots of humps and jumps, but very pleasant. From now on it begins to get more serious”, explained the driver of the Toyota Hilux team.
When asked about the secrets of such a good start, Varela answered in a simple way. “The strategy for the rally is to accelerate from the beginning to the end. We have to drive hard the whole time, as everybody has come with a knife between their teeth”.

Guiga Spinelli (Mitsubishi Petrobrás),who drives with the navigator Youssef Haddad, and closed the day with the second best timing, also gave details on the terrain of the special. “Today there were various and different jumps, of all shapes and sizes. A good ground, with a few stretches of reasonable ground, exactly as the organization had said. It can already be seen that everybody’s strategy is to drive hard. There was no way we could drive faster today, however, maybe with a few alterations in the car for tomorrow, which will be much like today”, he said.

The third fastest of the day, Marcos Baumgart, joked: “It seemed as if I was on a wild bronco, with so many jumps”, said the driver of the X Rally Team. “It demanded a lot from the brakes, but it was very good. Every day we go gaining more confidence. Just being here in the Sertões International Rally is already very gratifying. I have been here for 14 years, but I am always thinking of the next one”, the driver of the navigator, Kever Cincea, smilingly assured.

Trucks

The trio Edu Piano/Solon Mendes/Antonio Sales led the trucks in the first stage of the rally- The representatives of the team, Ford Racing Trucks/Território Motorsport had already been the fastest in the super prime, and even with problems with the brakes this Sunday, the were once more the fastest.

“It was a special with a bit of everything. Lockages, breakages, trials, high-speed stretches… It was a great day, I liked it a lot”, said Edu Piano. “We did well until kilometer 50, after that we had to reduce the rhythm because we lost the brake. We could have opened an advantage, but in general, it was a good day. It is promising to be a very difficult rally. The truck behaved well, but today was a short special that demanded much of the equipment”, he explained.
