With a very tight difference among the cars, the penultimate stage of the 22nd edition of the Sertões International Rally, took place this Friday (29), leaving Diamantina, in Minas Gerais and returning to the same city. There were only two seconds difference beteen the duos Cristian Baumgart/Beco Andreotti, the winners, and Reinaldo Varela/Gustavo Gugelmin, who came in second.

It was the first victory in a special for the duo from X Rally Team, who were always close to the leaders during the whole competition. Cristian describes what today’s t stage was like: “It was very much like yesterdays. Very enjoyable. When there was trial and stones, it was very dangerous; there was no escape. Then it began very fast, passing through the Maria Fumaça (steam train) trail, which was cool, with very long straight stretches. The noise of the cars is impressing when you go through these narrow places. We won the special. We imposed a hard rhythm. At the end there was much navigation, lots of sanf, erosion, depressions … It was a very enjoyable special”, the winner of the race explains.

And Beco Andreotti completes: “This was the first special that we won, even if by two seconds, driving at a Strong rhythm. We took one minute off Guiga, we are still three minutes behind. We are going in tomorrow with a knife in our teeth, we are going to give it our all. On the track, we are the ones winning, if it weren’t for a liaison waypoint. We are feeling that on the tracks we can win the Sertões and we are going to continue on this way”, assures the navigator, believing that a victory in the Sertões International Rally is still possible.

The duo also counted on the help from their team companions, who did not finalize the fifth stage, and are not in the fight for the title. “We got left out of the stage yesterday and what was left for us was to work for Cristian and Beco. We burnt our start and we caught up with them at the mouth of the radar zone, We put two new tires on for them and this helped them a lot in today’s results. If it were the other way around, they would have done the same for us. This is the advantage of being a team”, says Kleber Cincea, the navigator for Marcos Baumgart.

The competitors, Reinado Varela and Gustavo Gugelmin faced problems in the stage, however they came in second, with a small disadvantage to the winners. “Today was goof, but we had a puncture. We were doing very well, but because of a mistake of mine, I ended up getting a puncture tire. Now we have to row it all again. The rally only ends in the closed park. Tomorrow I’m going to give it my all, today was supposed to be for me to take off almost three minutes”, ponders Varela, driver of the Divino Fogão Rally Team.

Even with the third best time in this sixth stage, the representatives of the Mitsubishi Petrobras team still lead in the accumulated time. With three minutes and 11 seconds of advantage over Valera/Gugelmin and three minutes and 29 seconds in relation to C.Baumgart/Andreotti. “We forced the rhythm, but even so Cristian and Varela managed to be faster. It was within what we expected, without losing more than a minute and not taking big risks. We managed to administrate another day and we are going into the last stage trying to maintain the same strategy. Nothing is decided, on a special of 120 kms, three can be a lot, but it can also be nothing. A punctured tire can get in the way, we have to be careful”, cautiously says Guiga Spinelli, driver who competes alongside the navigator, Youssef Haddad.

Edu Piano/Solon Mendes/Antonio Sales X 6

In the six stages carried out in the 22nd edition of the Sertões International Rally up to Friday (29), the trio from the Ford Racing Trucks, led by the driver Edu Piano and that also counts on the navigators Solon Mendes and Antonio Sales, won no less than … six stages.

The navigator Solon Mendes told how was the sixth consecutive victory, which the trio closed with a time of 3h20min13. “If I were in my homeland, I would say that it was to ‘avuar as banda’ (fly the flocks) today”, jokes the navigator from the state of Ceará. “Our planned time was 3h20, but when we got on the mountain ridge, there was a car blocking the way. We spoke to the organization and they told us to climb the mountain and on top decide what to do, otherwise they would cancel the race. This was not the objective, we helped pull the car and we managed to pass. We blew the time by 13 seconds, but the limit was extended. Today my driver drove the way I like it”, Mendes exults.

Felicio Bragante/Evandro Bautz/Paco Corder, fromthe Asa Alumínio Rally Team, came in second place of the day (3h21min53) and, closing the stage, the trio, Guido Salvini/Flavio Bisi/Fernando Chwaigert, from Mobil Delvac Salvini Racing, came in with a time of 4h01min22.

With 100% success rate in the rally in 2014, Solon Mendes tries to keep his feet on the ground, even with an accumulated advantage of 1h12min12 and only 125 kilometers left of timed stretch left to go. “There is no anticipated title in the rally. The title is only guaranteed when the truck is in the closed park. We are going to drive normally tomorrow and hope it all works out”, he says hopefully.

Only another 336,93…

This distance in kilometers separates the competitors from the end of this year’s edition of the Sertões International Rally.
